The Tiger cross country team has begun logging miles, with the official start of practice last week. The first meet is coming August 30 in Winner. Coach Corey Sayler expects the team to be very competitive, especially on the boys’ side. The Tigers return several runners who qualified for last year’s State Cross Country Meet, including, Mathew Beardt, Tomas Martinez, Lucas Beardt, and James Leader Charge for the boys and Sasha Six Toes for the girls.
“Returning seniors Mathew Beardt and Tomas Martinez will be leaders of this year’s Tiger cross country team,” said coach Sayler. “Lucas Beardt and James Leader Charge will also compete at the varsity level.
“Our girl numbers will be down as we return freshman Sasha Six Toes who has made it to two consecutive state meets and junior Emma Twite.”
Coach Sayler reports a number of younger athletes that will also run on the team this year. They include Caleb Twite, Lawrence De’Sersa, Camdyn Plenty Horse, Gabe Beardt, AJ Bettelyoun and Nellie Leader Charge who are expected to compete at the JV and Middle School meets.
There is also a group of 5th graders running this year and they are: Colbe Scott, Remedy Morrison, Michal Ann Beardt, Freddy Leader Charge, and Aiden Iyotte.
“It should be an exciting year,” concluded Sayler. “Our season opens on Friday August 30 in Winner at 10:00 a.m. and wraps up with the State Meet in Rapid City on October 26.”
