Summer league games in White River wrapped up Tuesday, July 2. Play culminated, after several match-ups, with the final game of the night, the championship game.
Tuesday action opened with the #3 and #6 seeds, St. Francis and Todd County playing their first round game. St. Francis won 60-46. Seeds 4 and 5 were scheduled to play next, though Lower Brule didn’t appear for the game and White River II advanced by forfeit.
Semi-final game number one pitted the two White River teams against one another. White River I prevailed, taking the victory 68-25.
The Tigers had three players in double figures with Tavis Burbank leading the way with 16 points. Justin Prue followed with 15 points, and Justin Folkers had 14. Also scoring were Tré Iyotte 6 pts, Christian Bartlett 4 pts, Vinny Charging Hawk 4 pts, Tanner Larvie 2 pts, and Bubba Young 7 pts.
Gunner Piper led White River II with 9 points in the contest and Nicholas Young added 8. Other scorers were Chris Eagle Bear and Justice Morrison with 4 each.
Semi-final game number two was a close one with Pine Ridge getting by St. Francis 49-43.
The championship game provided the fans with a good measure of entertainment as both teams battled back and forth for the title. In the end, it was Pine Ridge with the advantage, 53-50. Burbank had a team high 20 points, closely followed by Prue who netted 17. Iyotte and Folkers added 5 points each, and Larvie rounded out the scoring with 3 points.
Coach Eldon Marshall was pleased with his team’s efforts through recent weeks. “All our guys did a good job of working to improve over the five weeks of summer league,” he said. “We still have plenty of work to do, but the guys worked hard and worked together and everything begins with that commitment.”
